Engine rebuilding kit (egge)

I have 5 x 288 engines to strip / inspect and pick the best one to rebuild.

I just put the first engine on my stand & took the pan off , took rod cap off number 1 for a quick look , this engine has done no work at all.

Just checking egge.com . They list no rebuild parts for 48-50 but have everything from 51-54

two of my engines are 48-49 , and three are 53-54 .

Does anyone know the 51-54 rebuild parts will fit the 48-50 ?? If not I'll stop what I'm doing & just fix the engines that egge have parts for. (Im in Australia , & Ive dealt with egge before)

But thinking again, if the rest of the engine is like the first rod bearing I wont really need any parts other than rings & gaskets.

cheers Don

Generally the parts are the same for the same type engine except some in 54. You can always use the parts book to check, though sometimes a vendor part will be appropriate even for more than one Packard number.

For example, a good number of cars 1940-1952 used the same head gasket:

Several years shared piston rings:

You can get most engine parts for a 288 from Terrill Machine in Texas.
Just send an email with a list of the parts you expect to need to terrillmachine@yahoo.com

Thanks , I have to get my head around how the parts book works & how the series numbers correlate with my engines.

You could also try Kanters or Meritt. I used a Kanter complete engine rebuild kit for my '41 120 but that was 15 years ago. Plus shipping now to Oz would be a small fotune!

The most significant difference between the 48-50 engines and the later is that the timing gears, chain and cover are wider on the earlier engines. The bearings, rods, pistons, etc are all the same.
