The handbook says Whitmore's "0" for trans and diff. What should the modern lube be? Also what should go into the chassis lubricator?

The Model A people apparently use SAE 140 Gear Oil. But I would wait to confirm as some modern gear oils can attack metals used primarily in old cars, like brass.

SAE 50 motor oil is quite adequate for the Bijur chassis oiler.

A GL-1 simple gear oil (typically straight mineral gear oil plus a defoamer) of appropriate viscosity for the transmission. Higher viscosity will supress gear spin a bit and make summer gear-changes a little easier; perhaps a SAE 120 year-round.

You have a hypoid rear axle so an extreme pressure gear oil such as a GL-4 or 5 is required. It might also be suitable for the transmission as you don't have any yellow metal synchronizers to be concerned about, yet were it mine I'd stick to a GL-1 for the trans just to be on the safe side.

As to viscosities, old time recommendations were typically SAE 90 for the winter, 140 for the summer; you could use a multi-vis that comes close in range to these values.

Was I in error, was the hypoid Angleset differential gearing not introduced until the 9th Series? If so my advice on an extreme pressure gear oil such as GL-4 or 5 being essential for an 8th Series was incorrect.

Photo of what I used in my 9th Series car. Available at NAPA but had to order it. I use this in the gear box, steering box and differential as a replacement for Whitmers. I live in the south so not concerned with cold weather use. It does require a double clutch for the first couple of miles then a single shift after the gearbox gets warmed up.

The 9th Series introduced synchromesh transmissions. Using a hypoid gear oil in a synchromesh transmission is counter-productive, the slip additives inhibit the function of the synchronizers.

9th series cars have a 4 speed gearbox. I read that Packard offered a 3 speed change out for the cost of the labor. I do have to double clutch from 4th to 3rd. Cannot go 3rd down to 2nd either way. As for upshift I only do that for a couple of miles as the trans warms up then it works perfectly as a single shift. I read a lengthy article that said Whitmers was 160 weight under the new ASI ratings in late 1931. Previous to that I think it was 300 weight which made some confusion because apparently Packard had already printed the 9th series owners manuals so had to send out supplement notices to the dealers on the change. Some people that did not see the supplement maybe tried to find 300 weight which at that point would have been steam oil which is a completely different product. I will try to find that article and reprint it here it was very interesting.
