Taking out the heater core on a 55 400

Despite a lot of anti-freeze, I had quite a leak when I put the heat on, in the interior. What a mess.

I bypassed the heater core. Wanted to verify there are only 4 hoses that go to it.

Can someone tell me how to remove the heater core so I can have it rebuilt. I have heard it was a challenge.

Also can anyone sell me that little gold shield that is right near the "Packard" script on the dash? Some motherf#!$er stole it in the garage.

Thanks for all your help

If it leaked all over the interior of the car then it's probably the heater control valve that failed. It's on the firewall right next to the fresh air duct on the passenger side. When the seal fails it leaks to the inside of the car. The heater core can fail too, but it's more likely that the control valve failed. Replacement seals don't seem to be available anymore, but you can send it in for a rebuild to various places.

You're in luck. Here is how to remove the heater core, and then this post details the disassembly and repair of the unit:packardinfo.com/xoops/html/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?post_id=280350

Hope this helps! 😁 Oh, and I have a very nice emblem here. $25 including shipping. I will include the push nuts for it as well.

One addition to the nice video Pgh Ultramatic made is he appears to have an early 55 car because I didn't see a small added bracket helping hold the box to the firewall.

On later 55s or the early 55s that had a field mod done and on all 56 models there is a small bracket welded at the upper inside corner of the box near the ballast resistor. In addition to the three 5/16 bolts holding the heater assy there will also be a sheet metal screw thru that bracket into the firewall. Some of the brackets were short or welded too close to the edge of the box and the screw is sort of behind the box needing the screwdriver to be held at a slight angle to turn it. Later brackets were a bit longer so the screw should be readily visible and accessible..

Again, unbeatable luck because I happened to be at a parts car today (5542-7803) and was able to get this screenshot off a video. And yes the car in the YT video is 55 Panama #152. Second oldest known to exist.

Forget Tucson Packards as they’ve once again become unresponsive.

Thanks to all as always. If the gentleman who has the " Packard Shield" that goes on the dashboard next to the Packard script would send a name and address I'll send a check today. Thanks MC

I think from the video the removal of the heater control vale is pretty straightforward, but if there is anything I should know please advise
