The Front Joint shoud have a grease fitting accessible when you remove the leather cover. Also clean off the old accumulated grease. For the Rear Joint remove it, disassemble, clean thoroughly and repack with fresh grease.

Thank you, Ozstatman, for the helpful information!
How exactly do you remove the leather cover? This one looks like it's held together by staples and somewhat fragile. I can slide it to the side and see a bit behind it -- is it a matter of sliding it all the way off? I don't expect I should actually open up the pouch?

Oh, don't mess with that leather. When you remove the shaft from the car to service the rear joint you will see there is a tin cover on the front of the front joint where it bolts to the flange. Remove that and repack it right there.

Thanks, Ross! Very helpful. I've never dropped the driveshaft on the car but seems like that's the way to go. Do I need to lubricate the splines where it goes into the pumpkin?

The spline should lubricate itself from the oil in the housing but it wouldn't hurt to put some gear oil on it during assembly. Maybe also a good time to replace the seat.

You will not be removing anything splined out of the pumpkin. Remove the two crossways bolts and pull the little stirrups off of the rear u-joint. That joint will now come free. Remove the 4 bolts at the front and the driveshaft will be in your hand. If it takes you half an hour your are dawdling.
BTW, the front joint is also the slip joint. There is no other.
