Greetings, I working to revive a 55 Super Clipper. I started it this morning and was allowing it to come up to operating temperature and noticed an oil leak under the car. After inspection it is clearly the front crankshaft seal in the timing chain cover. My question- is there an updated/ improved seal that should be used for replacement? Any special concerns? This look pretty straight forward.

I think so but there's not much point. Remove the radiator, dampener, fuel pump, and timing cover (2 screws attach the pan to the cover), then swap the seal. It's a very standard rope seal.

More details in the service manual.

Be sure first that it’s engine oil rather than transmission fluid from the cooler lines. If transmission fluid, it might just need the fittings tightened.

There is a neoprene one,
Don't have part number at hand.

Mine was neoprene equipped & it did not leak. The old style rope seals were better than anything available today and if dry is what you seek, Neoprene is what is required. Of course, the rear will still drip for old time sake :)
