Torsion compensator motor

Found this in the Chatroom. I'll PM PJ and let him know it's now posted here.

[PJ]: My mechanic tells me that the torsion compensator motor appears to be ruster up and in need of service. Is the a place which is experienced with servicing this motor?

If Cli55er is still checking in, he can tell you the type shop he took his to but the motor is nothing more than a slightly reworked Autolite (Screwed up--It was Delco) generator. Any auto motor shop should be able to clean and check, change brushes in it. Issue will be the front shaft bearing assy is part of the leveler mechanism so that could be an problem in run testing.

I stand corrected on make, but believe it was generator--hence the A & F terminal stampings. One article said all they had to do was a minor interal rewire for the coil and modify the armature shaft--no tooling required. At any rate, serves me right for relying on increasingly feeble memory instead of getting out of chair.

Number on one is 1109910-5J14 if it helps to identify brushes, components etc.

One reason "starter" comes to my mind is that the band-type brush cover for the compensator motor is like what was used on older starters.

Then again, my dad had a Bolens Husky 853 tractor with a Delco-Remy generator on the Briggs-Stratton engine that did double-duty as its starter, albeit through a belt, rather than gear drive.

Whatever the case, you're right that there should be little trouble getting an auto electric shop to rebuild the T-L motor. The technology comes from a time when componnent parts were wisely and widely shared.

actually the thing looks like a combo of both! however Mal, the problem i've found so far on 56 model t/l's (yours is a 56, correct?) is that the lube in the gearbox gets so thick it loocks the thing up! i have found this problem on 6 or 7 of them so far. not a single problem with one motor yet. and one was so rusty that the dust strap crumbled when i tried to remove it!

so the question is: what is actually wrong with yours?

There is no way to grease the front bearing. Water gets trapped there and destroys the front bearing and also the worm that drives the gearbox. You can get a replacement bearing and it is recommended to drill and tap the plug at the end for a grease fitting. Give it a shot once in a while. Clean and repack the gearbox with Owen Dyneto's recommended grease. I can't remember what it is right now and the search function obviously doesn't like me.

I don't have a '56. This thread started from a post I found in the Chatroom and I copied it into the V8 Forum because the Chatroom refreshes periodically and old posts are "lost". I sent the guy who posted it, PJ, a PM about doing that. To date the PM hasn't been read so PJ might be just a transient member of PackardInfo. Other than what's in PJ's post I know nothing about the compensator motor.
