V8 Lifters

I remember someone asking about V8 lifters a while back but can't find the post.

Randy Berger had a bunch of NOS TRW VL58 lifters mixed in with his V8 engine stuff. Offhand they look like a pretty close match.

Apparently those were used in 1965 – 1977 AMC, Jeep & IHC models with 196, 199, 232, 258, 290, 304, 327, 343, 360, 390 & 401 engines. So obviously there's plenty of new stock out there on RockAuto for like $5 a lifter.

Anyone have a better source? FWIW when I took apart my 320 engine I found that 15 out of 16 (yes, really) lifters had been replaced. It was obvious since the new ones did not come in as many component pieces as the original, but other than that they seemed identical.

I looked at a number of V8 lifter options, shown below. While the lifter height may differ, the distance from the bottom of the lifter to the bottom of the pushrod cup at the limited highest position is the same.

Also check the dimensions of the cup that receives the push rod end. As I recall, the correct replacement lifter is the Sealed Power (Fed. Mogul) HT-879.

I have a set of Sealed Power HT-879 valve lifters which are for 1959-1967 Dodge 318 and 326 V8 engines. I've not compared them to what's in my Clipper's 352 but I also haven't compared them closely to each other as they are in different boxes from different sources. At a glance they look the same but I suspect some are from a different, perhaps earlier, run. I bought these on eBay not too long ago and most were at a reasonable price but it weren't a full set. The last few to finish the set from a different seller cost as much as all the others!

Rock Auto is absolutely wrong if they say those are an application match. The 812s are for the later Mopars with a 5/16" pushrod seat. They will fit the hole, but the pushrod seat won't interchange with the Packard V8 1/4" diameter pushrod.

BTW, there is no Rock Auto. It's just a computer scrape of aftermarket catalogs. Rock Auto doesn’t own warehouses or stock any parts. Instead, it integrates with a web of 3rd-party warehouses — all digitally linked to its catalog system. Many times; much too often, their AI program makes assumptions which are flat wrong.

I got that list by cross-checking the application list from NAPA for a car that used the SP HT-879 type, then seeing what is listed for that car on RockAuto.

Not sure what you are talking about with AI; I am aware of how RockAuto works and I have a friend who works for a parts distributor that sells through them. Each part has a specific applications list which is indexed into the RockAuto catalog to show up when you search for it. Ultimately the applications list comes from the manufacturer or original vendor of the part. I know it's not a guarantee that it's right, though...

Please, just please, do some additional research and determine for yourself the accuracy of what you posted. If correct, state the manufacturer's catalog source; if it requires correction please do so.

One more time, the Rock Auto and NAPA online data bases are not reliable sources. They are far removed from the manufacturer's catalog.
