I'll post a photo of the valve spring compressor I used on my 356 tomorrow. Found it on eBay.

Here's a photo of the spring compressor we used last fall to overhaul the valves/lifters/lifter seats on my '50 356. It got a real workout.

I've both a K-D and a Lisle, both very similar to JD's. They are generally made to be pretty much universal, any one that looks like that should work.
DON'T FORGET to plug the oil drain holes with corks or rags so none of the keepers fall into the oil pan!!

Thanks--I got one from Sears today, and all the valves and components are out.

Quite a regular

Do you have the tool for putting the keepers back in? The first flat head I ever did (Jeep 134 F head)was quite a revelation as far as valve tools and installation procedures go. Without those pliers for holding the keepers you can spend lots of time swearing and looking for tiny keepers that somehow seem to travel really far when you drop them

I was shown by an old mechanic that a small spot of grease on each keeper will stick them to your finger and also stick to them to the valve stem. Don't forget to plug the oil return holes before you try this.

Yes a small dab of grease will hold the the keepers on the valve stem.
