I wonder when Packard switched from the mercury vial to the rolling ball? I am only very familiar with 55 and 56. Perhaps the ball was a much simpler and cheaper solution?

My '50 has the ball switch. It has a tendency to stick in the on position so the bulb has been removed for the time being.

My 49 has a glass tube mercury switch, but I cannot say I am sure it is original

Since a 1949 Packard can be either of two different models, it would be helpful when discussing their details to add whether it's a 22nd or 23rd series.

Folks,
Thanks for all the help. I found the item on Ebay and researched the part number. It is for a later car than my 23rd series. The one in my car looks like new on the outside, so I will test it and see if it works if you tilt it. Very clever!
