All the 288, 327, and 359 blocks are the same length, width, height, etc. The difference is internal on those motors. But I can see where the earlier (pre-1951) motor may he a bit different in overall assembled length because of the waterpump or fan design, and mounting. Keep in mind the the engine mounting changed in 1951 from a front mounted design, to a side mounted design.

You can use a 51-54 block on the earlier years if you use the waterpump, and front mount off of a '50 and prior engine. The mounting holes are still there 1951-54 blocks to allow this.

I pretty sure the replacement document was replacing the earlier 8s with the later 8s. Not a 6 with an 8. That would require some serious modifications.

I read it the same way Kev, it specifically references exchange back to the 1601 chassis which is the 1938 small eight or "120" chassis.

G'day all, The six and one twenty bodies are the same. The difference in wheelbase is all in front of the body. A Six would be a candidate for a Packard V8 not a 282 or 288 block. Unless of course you wanted to go the Eric way with his project.

Original post cited '38 Eight, unless it shrank by 2 cylinders and turned into a Six, should fit with the modifications required in the retrofit procedure.
