Probably a silly question did the 1940 Packards come equipped with turn signals?

Not silly and a good question as to if they were standard. Hope someone knows for sure because I didn't see a mention of turn signals in the 40 fact book at all and don't know when they were first offered by Packard.

40 and 41 180 schematics do show the front parking light wires that would normally be used for turnsignals but identify them as taped off. I would take that to mean the signals might have been available but an option so not standard. The schematics do not show the switch or the rear bulbs in either year. 42 schematics show the turn signal switch and wiring along with the separate bulbs at the rear.

David is correct. 1942 was first year for Packard to offer turn signals. However, I believe the 1940-41 models were wired for signals from the factory.

Howard (HH56), thanks for making the effort to clarify this. I agree. The inspiring pattern for the Kremlin was a 1942 model. The (working) turn signals give another proof.

It wasn't until 1954 that directional signals were federally mandated to be on all new cars manufactured or sold in the US. A bit surprising to me that it took so long to make it a requirement.

I wonder if the company that made the switches supplied them to Russia or if they made their own copy. The switch looks identical to one in a magazine ad posted a while back promoting the products of a company that made turn signals. That switch appeared to be the same as the switch Packard used till the 23rd series. Even the terminals on the wire ends of the Russian switch look like Wade connectors.

HH, if you examine one closely you'll find other minor parts that appear to be identical to Packard components. One guess would be that the source for such parts was purchase from one of Packard's overseas dealers, particularly in Scandanavia where the Packard dealers maintained very large parts inventories.

I found this in the July 1947 Automotive Industries.

Howard, Dave, I understand your doubts but what you see was (re)produced in Moscow.

Michael (WauhopM), sorry for the side trip.
