If you have the original tailgate the number is burned into the wood facing the front of lower part. The number on thr tag will 2293-xxxx or 2293-9-xxxx I believe.

I have a 48 station sedan. I bought in 2004.
The car came from Wilson Creek, Wa. (Farm country in eastern Washington state). My friend grew up on the farm next door and bought the car in about 1980.
He moved to Seattle for a job with Boeing aircraft.
He had no garage and unfortunately left it under tarp cover. Obviously the car was almost ruined. Luckily he removed all the exterior wood including the tail gate. They are in excellent condition.
My friend passed away and he never could find his lost title. Yes Washington is hard to get titles for cars with out titles. Luckily we did get a notarized bill of sale with the purchase.

If you have a friend in a neighboring state, they may be able to get a bonded title for the car. The difficulty is the car needs to be physically located in that state so a mechanic or patrolman can inspect the VIN, and bonded titles are also a pain to get besides that. But once you have one in your friend's name, he can title it over to you the same as any other purchase.

'55 400. Needs aesthetic parts put back on, and electrical system sorted.
'55 Clipper Deluxe. Engine is stuck-ish.

Packwagon,
Dell replied to the original question posed in this thread and said: Quote:

Since you have the wood in good condition you should at least be able to determine the Vehicle Number. Although I doubt that will assist in your query, it is one piece of the puzzle you no longer have to puzzle over!

Washington State has much the same laws as California but back when I lived in Washington as a teenager in the ‘60s, I had to just about jump through hoops to get the title for my 1941 Henney-Packard which had changed hands a number of times with no on ever titling it. In the end, though, I did get the title.

Regarding the vin number location.
Do you mean the plywood lower back panel?
My panel is like 1/2 thick.
Thanks,
Mike

If the wood is original the number would be burned into the forward facing surface when open.
