And, the choice was made to use a slightly cheaper stock of paper, with the paper size being cut down by 1/4-inch. The first 4 volumes of the quarterly published magazine or book if you prefer was also slightly larger by about 1/4 inch from the rest of the volumes published after the first year. There must have been a modernization or maybe a vendor change with their printing plant operation to have the paper size change. The second edition of the red book was probably published using the same press after those changes were made. As I recall a lot of newspapers were also making big changes in paper size during that period with many going from the full size papers to more of a tabloid size. Our local paper said their size change was because of the conversion to electronic layout and formatting software. Some time later they also mentioned advances in high speed presses which made the tabloid size much more efficient and one new press could do the work of several of the older presses. One plant could publish several different newspapers in the same amount of time so that was the reason they gave for shutting down the local press plant and moving operations to a plant of a sister paper in another city. . Maybe the same held true for book publishing. Auto Quarterly apparently didn't make it and if various articles are to be believed, many conventional printed magazines and newspapers are also failing or just barely hanging on.

Dear Mat (packard34), thank you so much for your selfless and heartfelt offer. There are certainly some people in this forum who fondly remember the service training films you uploaded.
You don't have a great storytelling voice? When reading your posts, I always imagined you as a true gentleman behind a wheel. Attach file: audio book.jpg (110.38 KB)![]()

Saints preserve us. Listened to the sample Mathew shared and in the first sentence heard marque pronounced "mark kay." Do we really want more AI? That, and listening to the entire five+ pound tome while driving would entail half a dozen transcontinental treks on backroads in second gear. BTW, the late Richard M. Langworth's hefty co-editing was dismissed by limelight grabbing Beverly Rae Kimes, relegating Dick to a dozen other contributors a couple pages later in smaller font.
What's wrong with sitting quietly and r e a d i n g ? Multi-tasking is an urban myth fomented by ADD and ever-present noise. Drive. Read. Packard advertised in, among others, the New Yorker, Literary Digest, the National Geographic. Perhaps we might preserve literacy as well as old automobiles.

As soon as you said "surely", this dialog ran in my head:
"Surely you're joking?" "I never joke, and don't call me Shirley."
