Hi

Now we know what they hoped to do with those bins of leftover Clipper headlight rims once Detroit closed down.

Steve

BTW, does the radiator grille look a tad oversized?

Proud 1953 Clipper Deluxe owner. Thinking about my next Packard, want a Clipper Deluxe Eight, manual shift with overdrive.

Yes, Mercedes knew exactly where and how to hit the US. Once the headlights are under German control, Detroit would be taken in a snare. The hooded headlights had a snap-on mechanism in hiding.

Steve, good eye for proportions! It is the car body, which is small.

Thanks, Gerd. You heard about re-badging a Mercedes and adding Packard-style grille and trim here from me first. Now photo shop a Packard grille on that lovely Benz.

All things considered, worse looking cars were being built in 1956. There was a post here a few days ago about the 56-57 Hudsons as probably the ugliest cars ever made and a few thousand of those managed to sell. If they were the ugliest then there is a chance the Packstudemercedes combination might have sold too. If they got rid of those two front sidelight or turn signal things sticking out it could have been positioned as the exotic European import of the day customized for American taste.

This Mercedes prototype is Packard's Request fulfilled.
Here's the story:
https://56packardman.wordpress.com/2015/06/09/gear-head-tuesday-packards-request-almost-fulfilled-by-mercedes-benz/

Note the unusual 3 piece windshield - which was repeated at the rear window - perhaps the windshield/rear window were intended to be interchangeable.

The above linked article then led to the Facel - Packard discussion:

The reason for posting this far-fetched story in the "General" department is, that the car, a so-called W122, has nothing to do with Packard. Well, it has four tires like the Packard Request but that's it.
The above pictured car did not make it into series production, it was a design model and not a "Packstudemercedes combination".

To play and change the appearance and visual identity is the idea behind design models. Here is another W122 prototype:

Gee, Gerd.

Just wonder how many, not named Mal, couldn't resist the temptation?
