Hello, can anyone shed some light on my Packard? Serial number 5479-2544 and the engine number is L413593. I am interested if the car is "matching numbers." The resources here tell me the car is a 1954 and the engine is a 1953. And I wonder if the lag in inventory combined with calendar year versus model year overlaps mean the engine could be correct. Thanks for any help.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but nope, your car has the incorrect engine. The engine for your '5479 was a new engine just for the '54 senior cars.

359?? I assume the 359 is a bore and stroked version of the 9 main bearing 327? If it is and since it was bored out .062" already (1/16"), was there a limit on over boring it for rebuilding the engine?

Factory service pistons for the 359 were available up to and including 0.040" oversize, same as for all 48-54 engines. More than likely different cores were used when casting the 359 block than were used for the 327 9-main block.

G'day mcclusk,
to PackardInfo and I invite you to include your '54 Convertible Coupe in the Packard Owner's Registry.

And, Bryce, in the Literature and Manuals Section, scroll down to Misc Packard Information(bottom right) and click on Packard Engine Serial Number Reference then open up the actual Packard Engine Serial Number Reference.

Would be interesting to know the reason for the engine change. I believe the 359 blocks were as robust as any other Packard engine but I'm wondering if the aluminum head gave up and the engine was replaced because of something that caused.

Lots of 359 blocks are running around with 327 or 288 heads -- although I believe it has been mentioned that they don't like some of the resulting compression ratios all that much..

Wasn't the aluminum head a problem on the 359 engine over time from corrosion?

Yes, the aluminum head did prove troublesome in later years, probably as much from cracks thru spark plug holes as corrosion. Yet surprisingly there are still a fair number of 54 seniors still happily touring with their aluminum heads.

They were pretty high compression I believe, something like 8.7 to one. Pretty good for a flat head engine anyway.
