If you refer to the pinion seal, there are a few hints here:

https://packardinfo.com/xoops/html/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=2045&forum=2&post_id=19427#forumpost19427

but IIRC, it is a pretty snug fit and must be driven in straight and to proper depth. If it came out that easily, would be wondering if correct seal.

not pinion seal...got that in already ;0) no worries there.

i am talking about that HUGE o-ring style seal that seals the diff to the diff housing and axle housings. a thin round seal. i got it on and put the diff into the housing, but the seal popped out of the grove and i thought maybe some RTV would hold it while i put the diff back into the housing and tightened it down.

OK, think a thin coat of RTV or maybe some non hardening Permatex would be just the ticket--

weekend update:

started cleaning up and painting the rear diff housing and trailing arms. 1st was black rust converter, then primer. starting cleaning the sway bars and painting that hardware too.

the eastwood chassis paint wont be in until tuesday, so i wont beable to paint the final stage until then. oh well, it will give it time for the primer to really dry up.

i had to drill out the big ass rivets that held the sway bars to the bracket. the only way i can think of rebuilding is to use 5/8" bolts and locking nuts. i will have to drill out the holes on the brackets themselves to fit the 5/8", but that is what i have to use because that was the size of the original rivot. the holes on the brackets are not too much smaller then the 5/8" bolts. i used 3" bolts so that i could get a smooth part of the bolt that was long enough. i will have to put the locking nut on and cut off the rest. they are zinc plated, grade 5, which should be strong enough considering how thick they are. i don't know anyone that has those big ass rivots and i know for sure i don't have the tool to install them, so this is the only solution i could come up with.

how did they ever expect anyone to change the bushing out...guess they didn't. you probably had to order the whole sway bar as a unit. with my solution i will beable to service it in the future. ;0) anyone else have a better idea?

i also installed the new oil seal at the ends of the axle housings.

i am waiting non the solenoids to get here too.

enjoy the pics.

later,

Hank

Hank,

There is a Packard part obscuring Leslie's signed poster to you. What did you do to deserve the poster and what does the obscured inscription say? "Can I be your next ........" Is it girlfriend?

Ahem young whippersnapper. Some of us doddering old geezers in the geriatric set might take that the wrong way.
