Another fun story I leaned from my dad.

Back in the early 60s, he was working on the engine with his brother-in-law (my Uncle Buren). Apparently Dad had broken a piston. When reassembling, Dad told Uncle Buren to be careful and not over-tighten the head nuts. They did not have a torque wrench and Uncle Buren was a very physically fit and strong guy.

A couple of weeks ago, before hearing this story, I noticed two head studs that are longer than all the others. Coincidence? Not likely!

Here’s one of them….

In that case, don't you just tighten 'em until the elbow clicks?

Well, he tightened until something clicked. Unfortunately for them, it was the studs!

It looks like your fender has rust holes near the crack. It's likely that rust from the inside surface and inside the rolled bead area lead to the crack. Rust will complicate repairs. I'd look for a better set of fenders, and check all rust prone areas of the car for invasive rust, and remediate as needed. The fenders flex some in normal operation, and any repairs need to be made so as to avoid making any one area around the wheel opening in the fender stiffer than the rest of it. Doing so will invite cracks on either side of the repaired area.

TxGOAT - you are correct. I have a good lead on replacement fenders. Hopefully, that works out. If so, I believe I’ll be in decent shape in terms of rust other than the floor pan in front of the rear seat. I know the source of that issue was the roof leaking. Fortunately, everything between the roof and the floor pan appears to be solid.

Well, the stars have aligned. The network, starting with Flackmaster lead me to a nice set of front fenders. Now, we just have to figure out the best way to get them half way across the country.

Half way is always better than all the way across country!

I know that two fenders fit in the back of a medium sized SUV.

I've done a couple of part collection turn around trips. Last big one was Chicago to Nashville and back. Also always keep an ear open for people going from point A to B. Sometimes parts can hitch a ride.

I'd see who is coming to the National in Wisconsin, as see if anything can travel with them.

That’s a great idea. My son and daughter-in-law are in Sheboygan, so that could absolutely work. We’ll also be driving to Dayton in June, so there would be a number of places we could meet up.

Anyone going to the National from the east coast had to come through the Chicagoland area. So they can waystation the parts here with me if needed.
