ah yes. thanx
im sure any question i can ask will appear on this website somewheres....
did some hill climbing in the Packard yesterday.
drum brakes on the ridge road descent = mediocre

we are going to try to modify the straight pipe exhaust ,

operation whisper mode :

build an auxiliary muffler exhaust ,
which can be A/B via valve

good for late nite approaches sans spitfire rumble

that would be a neat trick if we can pull it off...
gotta get under there and see if theres room

I don't know if they are still available, but back in the day we used to install "Lakes Pipes". They came in various lengths. They were welded into the exhaust pipe ahead of the mufflers and exited to the sides of the car. The "Lakes Pipes" had a cap on the end that could be easily unbolted and opened for that loud noise we all wanted, and then quickly closed for normal exhaust routing. No getting under the car to open and close them. The short ones only had the cap appearing usually just in back of the front wheel opening. The mid-length ones ran along the side and ended about midway under the front door. The full length ones ran along the entire side of the car and ended just in front of the rear wheels. The full ones also gave the effect of lowering the car, a cool look. They got their name from the dry lakes race cars that were equipped with them. You will only need one, but may want a dummy one for the other side.

Edit: Just Google Lakes Pipes and you will see what I am talking about.

JW, were you a juvenile delinquent also? That's what old people (our age now) used to call us back then. I remember those pipes and how loud they were. One of my friends had a set and a favorite passtime back in the day was to cruise down the main drag about midnight with those open. Get going a pretty good clip, then let off the gas and listen for the echos as the sound bounced off the buildings. Could hear them a loooooong way off. Downside was this was a one cop town at night and he didn't have much better to do than lie in wait.

Howard, I like to call that period my misspent youth. I don't think I've grown up, I still like noise. I have installed after market exhaust systems on some my new cars, but not the Packards. It is still fun, but much more expensive for those engineered cat-back systems.

The car is looking great! I like the GOLD WHEELS and I'm also looking to get some lake pipes and flame throwers. I'm jealous of your suspension.
