Smoking the Points, 49 Super 8

After changing the points, I found the wires to the distributor were shorting out, due to bare wiring in the harness.
After repair of exposed bare wiring, the points seem like they are getting the full 12 volts and burning out.
Does anyone have a wiring diagram?
The coil is fine.
Thankfully,
ALM

The wiring diagrams are in the repair manual. You can download that from this site.

Your car was built as 6v so I'm guessing that it has been converted to 12v. Points will burn up at that voltage so somehow resistance needs to be added to the circuit.

There are a few ways that this has been accomplished by the different manufacturers. The easiest but ugliest it the ballast resistor. Next is the resistance wire. And third was a coil with the resistor built in.

Any way you do it, you are looking for 2 to 3 ohms.

Also but least likely is bad voltage regulator allowing continuos full blast output of generator will cause points to burn too.

Thanks.
Sorry, I meant 6 volts. It is not converted, still the original 6 volt.
Stumpted!

Check that your system is not putting out more than 7.2 volts.

If the points are burning, then replace the condenser.

ALM,

Good advice from previous posters.

You can check the charging system output easy enough with a volt meter on the battery terminals. High voltage should be 7.2 volts. High voltage is hard on contacts, bulbs, and other electrical equipment.

I always clean new distributor points with an electrical cleaner before installing. Oil on the contacts from manufacture or handling will cause them to arc and burn prematurely. Sometimes the contacts will corrode if a long shelf life item. A quick pass with a point file should clean them.

Of course proper gap is important and 0.016" is a good setting.

A bad distributor ground might be the cause too. Sometimes a separate ground wire from the distributor body to a good fastener on the engine is the answer.

Hope this helps, good luck.

Just a note. If the engine is stopped but you left the ignition on and the points are closed, that will burn the points real quick.
