Guys and Gals

I see some pumps with short reservoir and some with long reservoir, my 53 has the larger one, I assume the short is pre 53. The short reservoir indicates that it is for both power windows and top. Why did the reservoir size increase? I also see smaller pumps different from the starter motor driven type for power windows, is this for later than 53 models?

Just wondering
Ken

I don't know the answer but I'd guess that no one knows more about the different units than Hydro-E-Lectric.

It's an interesting question and one I've kind of been curious about as well. There was a pump on ebay identified as Packard recently which -- unless it was aftermarket installed -- I don't think is correct. I wondered about the lack of a reservoir on that one and how it could have been used. Possibly Henney used some kind of small pump on their funeral coaches.

As far as Packard use I believe postwar they were all the same type thru 54. The shape of the reservoir might have changed slightly between pumps in 48-50 and the later 51-54 but don't believe it affected the capacity much. It had to be large enough to allow all 4 window cylinders to empty and store the contents. Prewars had a completely different arrangement with a reversible motor driving a standalone pump and then a separate reservoir tank. The cylinders were smaller so the tank might have been too.

55-6 had a small horizontal pump with a miniscule reservoir surrounding the pump. There was no large storage needed because fluid from the top cylinders was just rerouted one end to the other. The tiny reservoir just gave some expansion room and a slight cushion for a drop or two loss.

Hydro offered a 6v replacement pump for the tops along the lines of the 55-6 offering. IIRC, they also had a statement that it was not for use with windows. Whether that was due to reservoir size or pressure was not made clear.

Actually, the tank was fairly large. I think the reservoirs got smaller with each iteration of design.

It is a fairly good size tank for the size of the cylinders. IIRC, the prewar cylinders are shorter but not sure how the diameter compares with postwars. Maybe the total volume is close. If the volume is less, wonder if tank size was because they thought a large amount was needed with the remote pump setup or if it was a stock off the shelf size tank that was readily available.

The cylinders are about 2 1/8" interior diameter by 6". Five cylinders on my Limo. If all 5 windows are down...

The top is one I've never seen in a Packard so was thinking it might be aftermarket, a replacement or maybe something Henney used. The middle looks like Packards. I don't recall seeing the short can and stamped markings on the bottom one used by Packard but that doesn't mean much.

EDIT: From photos in a Motor's Manual, the bottom one looks like a Moraine Pump. Believe Packard used Dura from the factory but if there was a shortage or if one was replaced by a dealer, a Moraine might have been substituted.

The only 1 of the 3 that looks to me to be an original OEM Packard unit is the middle one.
