Was the 1951-54 three speed transmission made by Packard or someone made them for Packard? Has anyone installed a newer 5 speed of some type. John

Packard made their own transmission in those years.

John, this is the modification forum, so it is never safe to take anything for granted. Behind what engine and in what vehicle are you contemplating using a 5-speed transmission?

I was just wondering how adaptable any other transmission might be to the Packard clutch housing? But if they built their own transmissions it would probably require an adapter plate to mount up any non Packard transmission.

G'day John,

This link is to an old thread about modern transmissions. See Post #9 which mentions a Ford Borg-Warner T-10 Four-speed will bolt up to a Packard V8! Not what you're looking for but.......

Another possible info source would be Bendtsen's in MN, they have kits to put a Chevy auto onto a Packard straight 8. Maybe they have some ideas for a different transmission graft too.
