Special Day in Canada Anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge

Tomorrow is a special day here in Canada. One hundred years ago tomorrow April 9, 1917 the four divisions of the Canadian Expeditionary Force (my grand father and one great uncle were participants), together for the first time began the battle to take Vimy Ridge from three well entrenched German divisions . The ridge was taken in three days of bitter fighting. Some are of the opinion that this was a defining event from which Canada emerged from being a colony of Britain to become an independent nation.
The attached is a story about the Vimy Oaks that will be planted at the site of what is perhaps the finest monument on the Western Front which commemorates the fallen from the 1st World War. I would not be posting this here except for the fact that in this illustrated article there is an illustration of a Packard.

That is a beautiful story and beautifully presented. The '53 Cavalier is a great touch.

Thanks Dave. As you know, Canada was given the honor of being a separate country signer of the peace treaty mainly because of its forces taking Vimy Ridge from the Germans. This launched Canada onto the world stage as a major country. JWL

Dave,

Thank you for sharing, it makes me proud that the many Canadians both new and old put their lives on the line for the country. They were the foundation for a great country.

Respect is earned. I find if I'm wearing the Maple Leaf when I travel internationally it does make a difference.

I'm heading to China for a few days next week, I plan to pack my Packard jacket with a CDN lapel pin, to show both flags.

Bob
