fuel inlet filtting

Hi Guys,

The inlet fitting has bottomed out and leaking. (carter 531S) I've found three possible "fixes" - none ideal.

- high grade epoxy - easy and quick, but probably would ruin the carb as a core in the future.

-drill oversize and tap next size larger - concerned about cracking the case

/self tapping fitting - same concerns as above. Not sure I can find one small enough. I think this is 1/8 npt.


Anybody been here before? Recommendations appreciated,

Maybe replace that fitting with a short threaded plain NPT nipple, maybe even cutting off the first couple of threads so you'll have a larger threaded diameter which won't travel as far into the casting before the threads engage snugly?

I think I would try a close nipple too and as a bit of added seal use some Permatex #1 or #2 on the threads into the carb making sure to keep it well away from the end of the nipple so none gets in the carb. The issue with a close nipple is there is no good way to ensure it is tight in the carb or hold it while screwing the filter on without possible damage to the threads in a place you might need. You might thread it into the filter side first getting it reasonably tight and then use the filter body without the bowl attached to thread the nipple into the carb and tighten.

A long shot. If you have access to a lathe, you might be able to shave the collar thinner, to where you have just enough for a wrench to grab?

You might try a crush washer
like ones used on brake hoses or spark plugs.

I'm pretty sure in between my carb and the filter I have another larger fitting on the carb side and the the smaller fitting from the filter screws into that.

First type is NOT BUNA N so stay away from it. U need the B N for gas use.

BTW ive seen to many carbs broke at this inlet. Just me but i install a 3" hose (flex) at the carb inlet so there is not a strain on the carb. If u feel u need a inline filter do it at the fuel pump outlet or inlet with a modern-light filter.

My understanding is that npt fittings seal with tapered threads. So, wouldn't a washer move the fitting out from the taper and make things worse? Just asking....

Im sure the orig taping was done fairly perpendicular to the surface to give u seal. Question is there enough bearing area under the fitting to compress the oring. Something u will have to judge and try. Id say its worth a shot.
