Gear shift hex nut

I have a replacement gear shift knob from a 40 that I am trying to put on my 39 and I know I have to swap out the hex nut/core shank (not sure correct term) with the 3/8 24 one to fit. My old knob is in bad shape and while I could completely destroy it to swap out and slide into the replacement, I was hoping to avoid that as I tend to keep even the bad original parts complete for posterity. I couldn't identify via the parts list and have no clue the correct term to even find so welcome any guidance, help or sourcing for that part. I am also looking for the end cap if anyone has one, otherwise I will be making one.

Corey,

Don't know if this will help, here are a couple of screen shots from the 35-41 parts list detailing the knobs.

I ended up carefully removing the nut without damaging it too much after some thin chisel like separating of the knob from the nut. At some point it appears the unthreaded coupling part (that is 1-piece with the nuts on the 40) must have been broken and the remnant knob removed and put back on. Interestingly enough the coupling on the 40 is the same size inside and out as the 39 even though of course the thread size isn't, so I am going to cut it and reuse it. Next step I need to mix and color some epoxy resin to fill a large crack and to make an end cap. I hope my skills at matching this are better than they were in elementary school.

The Steele Rubber replacement knobs are unthreaded. They just self thread when you screw them on over the shaft.
