Super 8 Distributor Drive Gear Clocking?

We had an engine rebuilt at a local shop. When I installed the distributor, it seems like the drive gear is 1 tooth off... I think the distributor rotor SHOULD point towards either #1 or #8 cylinders when the engine is at TDC. Mine points almost at the next cylinder in the firing order. Also, after looking at the drive gear with a borescope, it looks like the distributor drive is installed from the bottom of the crankcase and will require engine disassembly to re-clock it? Any thoughts or work-arounds?

I can't comment on the clocking itself and basing this on my experience with many later Packard engines, the gear is on the oil pump which is accessible externally. Just pull the pump although seeing the marks to clock it without also pulling the pan might be difficult.

'55 400. Needs aesthetic parts put back on, and electrical system sorted.
'55 Clipper Deluxe. Engine is stuck-ish.

When I put my 1932 385 engine together there was a dot on the drive gear. I think it corresponded to a dot on the camshaft. You can't get the distributor gear out without taking out the camshaft on a 385. You could make a new drive shaft which clocks the distribute in the right direction. (I would think the 320 ci engine has the same configuration.)
