There is a plug needed and I believe it is the cup shaped type -- whatever those are called. Check out the oil gallery metering plug article on page 15 in this service counselor. It has an end view of the plug and information on the size hole needed for adequate front seal and timing chain lubrication for engines with either solid or hydraulic lifters.
