There was recently some talk of this problem in the thread: "Driver door doesn't close properly"

My problem was the worn door latch assembly, rather then the sagging hinge problem.

For what it worth, this is were I stand with my problem:
I was able to remove the door latch assembly with the help of all who replied to the forum. I took the latch to my local locksmith and he didn't think the spring was broken.
I am not so sure.

I surmised that if the broken part of the spring dropped down by gravity, that was when the latch would not open.
My friend Joel Ray (packard1) said that the problem is that the star wheel on the inside gets chewed up and that causes the problem.

To make a long story short,I used some very thin plastic cable ties to fix the spring so it stays together.[/color] It is working good now but I consider this a temporary fix.
(The spring looks like the first one for sale in the e-bay link).

I would like to find a replacement so that I can have it rebuilt when I find someone who does that kind of work .

I'm sorry I didn't take a picture of the fix before I re-assembled it.

Earl Serjup, of MN Packards, told me the same thing.
I have a driver door that closes only half the time or less.
He said one of the cogs on the star wheel is broken. He said that replacement star wheels have had the same problem.
SOOOOO.. I quite SLAMMING the door harder. I just close it with normal force and the next cog on the wheel catches it and it closes.

I don't know how many cogs on those star wheels? I think it may be 4.

Correction!
When it doesn't close, I manually advance the star wheel (on the back edge of the door). Then I close it normally and it catches smoothly.

It is the inside part of the star wheel that tends to get chewed up and break off. Then that cog does not work properly.

If you can't find Packard parts to repair the latch, try to get a Chrysler kit, some of the parts including the latch wheel interchange.
