A friend on another forum came across this flashlight and thought I should have it:

Resized Image

It says "PROPERTY OF PACKARD MOTOR CAR CO BRIGHT STAR NO 1618". It is a standard 2-D-cell black plastic with red translucent lens cap. It shows hard use and the lettering is pretty much gone.

I have a similar yellow-and black "Property of US Steel" which I inherited from my father - a 40-year veteran there.

Nice catch, Jack!

I have a flashlight of similar construction from the B&LE RR - same coloring and vintage as your US Steel example. It's incredibly sturdy. Bet they don't build 'em like that anymore.

Yet, I wonder why that PMCC torch needed a red beam.

Red beam is great for gathering night crawlers

The lens is clear. Only the screw-on retaining ring is translucent red plastic.

I still have a similar one issued to me about 40 years ago during my game warden years.

Bright Star is alive and well. They are a current vendor of the company I am GM for. They are huge in the industrial world. www.flashlight.com.

This website shows one from 1940 Flashlight Museum. If you e-mailed Bright Star, they may be able to tell you the years they made that model so you can get an idea of how old it is.

The red lens cover was probably used when a person was going from inside to outside, like what a night watchman would do. A red light will preserve night vision while allowing enough illumination in interior spaces to see objects and move around. Ask any old sailor about this.
