I have a 1002 and interested in adding an overdrive. Gear Vendors has a unit with electronic function, tho expensive, that would help a great deal as our plans are to drive this car cross country. Anyone used this manufacturer? I'm familiar with the available Mitchell O.D. and the 4.06 ring and pinion available. I would like to reduce the rpms lower than the available 4.06.

Ask the president of the Northern California Packards. He has an overdrive unit on his '36 standard eight. Their website is easily accessible and you can contact him from there.

Go over to the AACA.org and go to the packard forum. There was a recent discussion about someone supply Borg Warner OD units compete for about $1900.

Gear Vendors units are rated for 1200 hp, 30,000 lb. vehicle capacity and are the smallest package size I've seen. They use a internal hydraulic circuit to actuate a locking band on a planetary set with a .78:1 ratio.

Thanks for the info and I just received a new Gear Venders overdrive to be installed later this month of February.

What was the cost?

Gear Vendors unit run $2600 to $2900 (USD)depending on the application.

You get what is shown in the picture above. The purchaser has to have his drive shafts shortened and balanced, fabricate a mounting plate, and complete the installation and wiring.

The GV unit is controlled by a 6V or 12V solenoid. The speedometer gear inside the GV unit is matched for your tire size and read end ratio so your speedometer / odometer will read accurately.

I like the idea of a electroniclaly activated OD as you can hide the button under the dash, not so much with the mechanically activated.
