Has anybody dealt with Packard Carburetors Ltd. of Eagle, Co. I am thinking of purchasing the standard eight version for $2550. I know they are custom built but seem pricey. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
The address as PO box 6060 doesn't sit well with me.
Thanks
Ed

There has been some murkiness about this venture, I'd proceed with some caution as I would with any vendor unknown to me and without a well-established reputation. I suggest you search here and on AACA forum for other comments about this. You might also talk to the boys at Max Merrit who I understand placed a sizeable order for these units some time ago.

Dear Ed:

If the units perform as new the price is not unreasonable given that a worn out carburetor causes premature motor wear.

However, that is a big IF. For example, years ago somebody found a brand new Stromberg EE-23 in a warehouse. They put it on their 34 Su8 and the performance change was so tremendous they thought the old carb was junk.

If you don't have a carburetor for your car there are other carburetors that will fit. I think one is the Zenith BB1. They are not easy to find either, but I would do some serious checking around before committing to the replica DL 51. If they are good then people should be raving about them.

Hi everyone
Finally got through to Packard Carburetors, Ltd. Below is the email reply I received. After setting up carburetor/parts details with David I will be personally picking up these parts when I travel south. Will keep you posted.

Edward, Yes we are still in business and we are prospering! We have relocated to Spokane, Washington area to be close to our vendors. What area in Canada are you traveling from as we are not close to Reno any longer (we are on I-90 interstate).
I will make every effort to facilitate your personal delivery of your carburetor or parts. What do you need for parts and what type of fuel pump do you have on your carburetor Gravity or Electrical? Would you e-mail me a picture of your carburetor for reference when we are talking about it? You may also call me at 775-842-4282. Thank you for your interest, Best Regards, David.

I would suggest a few emails back and forth to determine their return policy and guarantee. Then use a credit card. If something goes wrong, then it is up to them to prove that they delivered the item as promised (both arrival & performance).

Marty

As I plan on physically inspecting and pick up the parts myself I am not worried about delivery. I was hoping that someone would chime in that has already purchased and was using this reproduction. I am in no hurry to throw $2550 away and will proceed with caution.
Thanks for your comment.

Dear Easyed:

The more common carburetor for the 6th series is the bronze Packard carburetor. If you can find one of those they are more rugged. The Potmetal carburetor has the accelerator pump and power valve which allows for a wider range of approximation, but I would try to find the bronze unit because it is very rugged.
