Thanks Mal. A most attractive straight-8 with the finned aluminum head and dual carbs. I have always wondered why Packard did not dress up their engine compartments in the later years with finned aluminum heads and chrome plated air cleaners and other bits. It did not have the V-8, but it could have had the most attractive engine. Oh, well...

Did I miss the story on how the head got the fins?

They are cast that way, it's an aftermarket item.

Google Eddie Edmunds, he's the guy who built the head and manifold not just for Packards but for most other cars of the era. Here's one link.

In Mal's link the 2nd image has been reversed - it's a Packard but note the theft-proof number on the right and backwards. I also note pressure regulators on both carburetors.
