Brake & Clutch Pedals and the Toe Board on a 1932

As mentioned in earlier posts when I got the car it had been disassembled and was going through restoration by the owner, which leads me to try and figure out how it goes back together not to mention the task of trying to figure out which box(es) the parts might be in as his organizational process was vastly different than what I would have liked it to been.

Anyway, I got ready to finish installing the brake & clutch pedals and the inclined toe floor board. The spacing between the pedals center to center is 2 ?" while the openings in the floor board is 4 3/8" so the pedals won't fit through the openings. It appears that the clutch pedal aligns OK with its opening, but the brake pedal is about 1 1/2" to far to the left. I've looked for part numbers on all three pieces to confirm that they are correct but don't find any. Can someone out there tell me what's going on and what I'm missing?

I just checked the pedal set up on y 1930 740 and the opening in the toe board and the spacing between the pedals on the shaft is about the same as your 1932 but the pedals are not straight like yours they are both offset so that they align with the openings in the toe board. Looks like the pedals are not correct for your model if that is the correct toe board. I don't know anyone with a 1932 that I can check.

They both have a small offset the clutch about 3/4" to the left and the brake about 3/4" to the right. The clutch looks like it would go through the hole but the brake needs an offset of another 2 inches or so. Everything on the brake pedal seems to align with the other brake connections.

I'm going to need to move the body to the left about 3/8 inches to actually tell about the clutch, which I plan on doing later in the week.

How much offset do your two pedals have?

The pedals on my 740 are 2 1/2" apart at the shaft, the left pedal is offset 3" to the left at the pedal and the right pedal is offset 1" to the left then at the pedal and 1 1/2" to the left just below the pedal . The pedals are 4 1/2"" apart . These measurements are approximate and are about at the centre of the pedal arms.

I will try to attach a photo.

The part number for the 7th Series brake pedal is not the same as yours which I assume is a 9th Series so this may not be of much use for your car.

It looks like the brake pedal arm may be bent slightly to the left. A few pictures from mine that may help you.

Hi Martson:

Those can be a puzzle. There are three spacers that usually get lost when cars are taken apart as well.

It looks to me as though they bent the brake pedal arm when they where messing around with the motor. I would try heating it and moving it. But be careful because it has been chrome plated and, thus, become brittle due to the plating process.

I had two thick. (about .063")spacers on the clutch / frame side and a stack of thin washer/ wave spring / thin washer (about .015" each washer) between the brake and clutch pedals.

My pedal arms were not plated.

You may be able to get the correct spacing by adjusting the washer stack-up, instead of bending.

Parts becoming brittle after plating are primarily limited to alloy steels with a hardness higher than 30 HRC, that are not baked after plating, to avoid hydrogen embrittlement.

Tim, Dave (32model901) & DaveM I want to thank for your inputs. Neither pedal shows signs of being bent or alter.

The main portion of my brake pedal comes off of the hub at a 90 degree angle (see photo) with a slight jog at the top end. If I understand what Dave is saying, his car's brake pedal bends slightly to the right. I've made a sketch of what I think Dave mentioned.

This would meant that I should heat and bend my car's pedal to the right.
