When the 2 springs are different, the weaker one goes on the primary (forward) shoe.

The orange spring is primary, yellow the secondary spring.

Not meaning to intrude on someone else's posting but if the paint is gone, are there any dimensions available to identify which is which?

Bend them and the weaker one is the front, same if you're colorblind or working outside at midnight.
The heavy duty version has same springs front and back. Industry #'s front #122 orange, back #130 YELLOW

In the illustration, above, the springs are also identified as short and long as well as by paint colours.

Thank you. I'm actually trying to identify many that I have all mixed together with '60s Cadillac and Imperial springs that all look oddly similar. Some are even the same colors when I know they did not come from any of my '50s era Packards so I am looking for specifics to be able to sort them out. Not a matter of color blindness if many don't have any paint.

Thanks for the answers.
As the parts book and service manual are a bit lacking regarding pictures and information this forum is what makes it possible for me to restore my 2150. The manuals were of course not intended for assembling a car that had been disassembled 30 years earlier by someone else. I have testinstlled the rh rear brake to see that everything fits and works. Then I am going to find new brakelinings. In Sweden we had many workshops that glued new linings to old brakeshoes. Hope there is still such a workshop around.

Try a brake shop that deals with trucks.
