Is this a 1956 352 engine?

I believe that a casting number, not the engine number. I believe the engine number should be in a XXXX-XXXX format. See the engine serial number guide in FAQ for more info and location as V8's are not by strong suit.

If you mean where it is installed, it goes in a threaded port on the drivers side of the head very near the back of engine. It is about 6" or so directly above the starter. If the wiring is stock, there should be a dark green wire connected between the sender and the gauge.

440275-A casting number and 4-18-56 date would make it a very late '56 352" block.
As mentioned, the S/N will indicate whether it was installed in a Clipper, Packard, Studebaker, Nash or Hudson. jack vines
