PackardV8, I don't know if this helps or not, but for email or internet posting I automatically resize my digital photos to 10 x 7.5 (varies with format) inches @ 150 pixes/inch. Silver halide prints I just scan at original size, same resolution. Even when I was on dial-up these loaded reasonably quickly.

Thanks Owen. And yes, i've never had any problems viewing any pics that u have ever posted. Yours always display quickly and clearly.

The last AC pics were a bit large at 1meg or so each and understand why you are having trouble. Mine also slowed a bit on those but with cable, not significantly. I think Kev has suggested 400k or less as his preferred. Unfortunately, cameras do seem to want to take and download large files these days and without a little work, those get posted.

This begs the question if Kev uses two different filters, one for embedded and another one for attached pics.

Just a little info on the picture resizing magic behind the scenes...

The website will try to automatically create a smaller version of an uploaded picture for quick viewing. But there are times when there is something either funky about the picture, or the picture is so large and the amount of memory required to process it exceeds what is currently available on the web server at the moment. When this happens the website just blindly attaches the photo to the forum and moves on. Hence the large photos in the forum occasionally.

I recommend using the resizing program BigKev wrote for the website. It is easy to use. I always convert my pictures with it before posting.

One of the biggest problem I see with pictures is most cameras save the photos in JPG format with no compression, which makes the file size HUGE, and slow to load. So the act of opening them and resaving them on a computer usually causes the computer to save the picture with compression causing a dramatic reduction in picture file size. Remember folks the pics here are being used for web viewing, not photo reproduction, so we don't need 10 megapixel images. Also 1280x1280 or less is fine as well. 6000x6000 is just way to big.

100k-300k or less makes a perfect fact loading photo with enough quality and detail for what we are doing here. Also the guys on dial-up, or slower connections will thank you!

You can use my free utility on a PC to both resize, and add compression to you photos one by one, or in batch.
