North Korean Packard or on of those Russians?

Years ago I clipped an article from Newsweek of August 7, 1989, pages 38-39. The article entitled Kim II Sung's 'Socialist Paradise' had no interest for me except for the photograph of a Packard or Packard look-a-like

Of course, dear leader was featured, but also featured were 2 cars. Both cars looked like 1937 Packards or they could have been Russian "fellow travelers."

If I knew how to post pictures on the site I would post the photograph of the two Packards or the "whatevers!!!"

I bet dollars to donuts these cars now reside in the museum dedicated to the "dear leader" no matter their brand.

Do doubt Moscow distributed their Packard look-a-likes to their minions as gestures of friendship and to engender loyalty from their drones.

I was under the impression that the Zis Packard look alikes did not appear until after the war, and they were based on 1942 Packards. Gerd?

Juan (zougeride), please follow the instructions, published by BigKev:

"If you want to attach a picture, you can select "Choose File" select the picture off of your computer, and then click the "Upload" button. You can repeat this as many times as you want for as many pictures as you would like to attach. (similar to sending email)"

North Korean national television 2011 [edit:] 2007

I place a bet for 5 Dollars and kindly ask you to transfer the betting debts [edit:] a donation in favor of PackardInfo.com. The donate button you'll find at the bottom of this page (right hand side). If the above shown image is considered too old to serve as proof that the mentioned cars are still in service and not residing in a museum I could hand in another photo later, which was taken in 2013 or 2014 (I'm on business vacation at the moment). Both mentioned cars are still in service.

Allow me to return to this interesting topic to continue the reply during the next days.

Mal, thanks.
John (JW), before delving into the history, I would like to start with a short abstract of current foreign trade conditions.
Trading with North Korea is not easy. After many rounds of trade restrictions on North Korea, there are not many things left to sanction for the members of the United Nations.

Department of Commerce, Bureau of Industry and Security:

"EMBARGOES AND OTHER SPECIAL CONTROLS
.
.
? 746.4 NORTH KOREA

(a) Licensing Requirements ...
(b) Licensing Policy ...
(1) Luxury Goods. Applications to export or reexport luxury goods, e.g., luxury automobiles..."

John, I agree in principle. But a hair-splitter could use your words to produce a cloud of hot steam. The beginnings don't fit to our pre war / post war scheme. The first copies of the 1942 One Eighty popped up during the war. Please find attached one of the very first pics, distinguishable by the blackout lighting. The radiator mascot is a previous version.
Additional we have to define "Packard look alikes", since the predecessor models, named 101, consisted of many Packard genes. But I don't believe, that Juan (zougeride) had them in mind.

Thanks Gerd. Clarification and correct information is what we need. Interesting that the USSR was producing automobiles during the war in addition to all the military materiel.

Thanks John. To close the circle, I want to cast a light on the above mentioned predecessor "101". It was built with the help of tools (dies and presses) from Budd Philadelphia in different body versions between 1936 - 1941. This deal is well documented but nevertheless forms a part of the later legend. The way from US tools to Packard tools has been short.
The 101 is a combination of everything. Nobody less than Stalin himself approved the design, which sounds like one of those "Kalashnikov-Stories", I admit, but a couple of photos bear witness to this event. The front is 1935 Cadillac, the engine is Buick but from the center to the tail end one could (mis)take the car for a mid-thirty Packard One Twenty. Please see for yourself.

Assuming I'm looking at the right picture, is not the front view more reminiscent of a Chrysler product than Cadillac? Especially so the grille, fenders and windshield shape.

Dave, thanks. I had one of those in mind but your advice motivated me to go into that matter. Your comparison is more appropriate.
