Are all 1939 Packard Grills the same? will a 120 grill fit a Super 8? Are 1938 and 1939 Grills the same? Thanks JT

I don't know about the interchangeability of the grilles, but I do have a question about body styles brought on by your forum name and the photos of your 1939 Packard. I was of the understanding that limousines have a partition between the driver and passenger compartments and may have extra stowable seats; while 7-passenger sedans may look like a limousine and have the same seating arrangement do not have a partition. Or, is name Limousine a body style term with wide use and may mean whatever the manufacturer wants, like roadster?

The answer of course lies in the parts book but I doubt very much if all 39 grilles are the same since the 39 Twelve is based on the 38 Senior bodies and the 39 Super 8 is based on a 120 body.

I think you are getting into precision of language/evolution of language/sloppy use of language.

To me, a limousine has a divider window. Otherwise it's a sedan (7 passenger if jump seats fitted).

A roadster is an open car without roll-up windows, not a two-seat convertible that the marketing department wants to call comething sexier.

I confess I am confused on touring car vs. phaeton.

bkazmer, I think you are right, body style names are too inconsistent to be used with any preciseness. I'll look and see how Packard used these terms. Thanks.

Here's a couple of pic's from the parts book. From my limited comprehension it appears there is some interchangeability. There are a couple of guys in the club here who would probably be able to give a "hands on" answer but until I can catch up with them this will have to suffice.

Hi JT,

I think I might be able to answer your question. The Super 8 is not interchangeable with the 12.

The Super 8 and junior cars are physically the same size, but the Super 8 has movable shutters controlled by a shutter-stat. The junior cars in most cases did not. I say in most cases because as I understand it they could be ordered with shutters if the owner wished. I have also understood that some junior platform professional cars could have been delivered with shutters. Physically they will interchange with the only difference being shutter v. stationary grill bars.

Thanks for posting the images, your car is great!

Best of luck,
Jim

Pines Winterfront (shutter-stat) was standard on 1938 120s (known in 1938 as "The Eight", not sure about 1939.

I believe standard in 1939 as well. Also on the 110 or "Six".

The photos of the car posted by 39limo is indeed a touring sedan. A limo would have a divider window. Some of the touring sedans had partial dividers, but without the window (such as my car).
