With a motor number beginning with "N", we really don't know what we have for an engine yet. Just above the oil pan line and toward the back of the engine should be a casting date. It is cast into the skirt of the engine on both sides, usually. If it turns out the engine is of the 48-54 vintage I will be happy to sell you pans from here til next tuesday.

Cylinder head does not necessarily match up to engine. A common swap was to put a 288 head on a 327 for higher compression. You need the engine number, and doubt it starts with an "N".

On the side of the block the letter N then 2 and more numbers are stamped. One clue about the engine is that the block comes up right to the firewall and it looks like someone hammered on the firewall in order to make clearance. It could be a 327 but whatever it is I cannot find the N number in the list of motor numbers that I downloaded from the forum. The highest the numbers go is to M so it is confusing. My 120 starter fited right on so there are some parts that will interchange. I am trying to fix the pinholes with epoxy but we shall see. I will be visiting the car on Monday so maybe I can take some pictures. By the way is there anyway of cleaning out the old jello type ancient oil other than taking the motor out and hot tanking it?

More likely than not the N sequence in the block suggests a service replacement, which in your case, is a 288/327 in the place of a 282, which yes, was sanctioned by Detroit. Forget the expoxy - get a pan from Ross - now that he got his roof fixed, he doesn't need them when it rains.
