I believe the 100 ft. lbs noted previously for the rear axle/brake drum nuts is much too light, I didn't check the manual but I think something like 240 to 270 ft.lbs is more in the range required.

You are right. I don't know what I was thinking. Thanks for the correction.

Well it's been in the 80s the last couple days. So very nice weather to work in the garage (aka Mantopia).

Thanks Mal. I try to take pictures in series so it not only helps me later during reassembly, but perhaps may help someone else that stumbles across my Blog later on.

I would have got more of the brake parts media blasted today, but I need to change out the media. It's not cutting very well anymore and it's caking up. So I think it just too contaminated to use, and needs to be replace. So I am off to Harbor Freight in the morning to get another 25lb container of 80-grit glass bead.

I also noticed that I am going to have to replace at least the rear section of the exhaust as the pipe is rusted away close the gas tank (see picture).

Does anyone know what these holes are for in the inner fenders in the rear (see pic 2). They exists on both the left and right side.

Also I haven't looked in the service manual yet. But do I have to repack that axle bearing, or is it lubed another way? Never done rear drums before, so that is why I am asking.

Most likely the tab on the fender with the hole in it was for the stamping process at the factory. It fit over locating pins in the stamping die to keep it aligned with the punch.

Good idea to check the manual, but my gut tells me to always pack 'em, even if they can be lubed from an external grease fitting or internally from the axle. At the least, it will assure they have initial lubrication as soon as the wheel starts to roll. Just like in an engine, the most wear comes in the first few seconds until lubrication gets to all moving parts.

If I'm all wet, someone come in and give me 20 lashes with a wet noodle.

BigKev- You mentioned you were going to NAPA - Did NAPA have the correct brake shoes in stock? Did you have to have X-Ref information with you, or the old brake shoes with you?

Also, I noticed your detailed pictures on the water distribution tube removal (Post #260, page 13). Since I've been having a lot of overheating problems I think this may be worth the effort to pull out and inspect. To do so I'll have to remove the radiator and grill.
Quote:
So with the pump off, I figure it was a good time to pull and clean the water distribution tube. It took me awhile to pull it loose. I guess 50 years of rust and gunk gets things pretty well stuck. So out came the tube. I guess it was a good thing that the pump was leaking and as such allowed me to clean the distribution tube as the rear 4-5 inches of the tube were completely clogged with rust scale and dirt. I would imagine that cylinder 8 was getting reduced flow compared to the rest of the cylinders.

You mentioned the reduced flow, were you able to clean up the tube? It would be a large undertaking for me to get to the water distribution tube, but if it will cure my overheating I'm willing to give it a go.

Yes NAPA had the brake shoes in stock. The brakes on most post-war Packards are standard Wagner shoe sizes, and were used on many cars up into the 70's. So NAPA has them, or can get them inside of 24hrs. That being said the 1954 Non-Super Clipper use the same brakes as the '55 Clippers. The '51-'53 Clippers and '54 Super Clipper all used the same brakes. On my '54 Clipper the fronts are 11x2.5 and the rears are 11x2.

All the brakes I have found should be in the parts X-Ref. Also if you go to RockAuto.com and drill down through the catalog by Make/Model/Year, they will list the modern Raybestos part numbers. Also I was able to do this with AutoZone.com also. If you do a thread search here on the website, you will see where I posted a link to the Raybestos catalog. Once you have a Raybestos part number, then any parts store should be able to cross reference that to whatever brand they carry or have in stock.

On the water distro tube, at least the radiator would have to be remove, not sure if you could pass it out throught the grille or not. The Distro tube is pretty soft material, so if you manhandle it too roughtly, you will dent it or bend it. I used a coat hanger to loosed up the stuff wedged in the end of the tube, and the spray it out with a garden hose until all the muck has gone.
