Door Handle Retainer

I have a 1941 model 110. The outside front door handle on the driver's side slips out. It has lost its retainer. It has a square shaft with no screw holes. What part do I need to hold it in place.

I thought it was held in by a screw that went into it at an angle through the door jamb, or at least that's what 1940 110s had. As I recall, they are short screws and according to the parts book, they are 10-24 X 9/16. I don't recall the head type but they had some kind of retained lockwasher to keep them from coming loose.

I believe it is retained by machine screw from the edge of the door. I would check another door on the Packard.

If the '41 door handle is similar to the '48 trunk handle (apparently many others) then the handle assembly is comprised of a handle, escutcheon, square shaft, and a locking collar. It is the locking collar that simultaneously attaches the square shaft to the outside handle, and keeps the handle from pulling out of the escutcheon. It is the escutcheon that is affixed to the door skin with machine screws.

Now the question is whether the '41 door handle is similar to the '48 trunk handle in design, and if it is the technique I used to fix my '48 trunk handle/latch perhaps could be used to repair the '41 handle.

Dan W. here's a link to the fix for the '48 trunk handle/latch. If it looks like a viable fix please let us know for future reference. Post #12 from HH56 may depict what has happened (again assumes the designs are similar). Post #15 from BDeB shows the assembly and the escutcheon and 'thimble' ('41 versus '48 disclaimer).

The door handles had nothing on the shaft and could be removed without even removing the upholstery panel. The screw holding them in was in the door jamb and screwed directly into the handle from the side.

On these 1940-1941 handles from my site's classified ads, the raised bump on the casting right where the shaft meets it is where the screw attaches.

Hi Dan W - welcome to Packard Info. Further to Don's post, here are a couple more pics that show the screw close-up. Also, there is a 'shake-proof' washer on the machine screw that should be there to keep it from coming loose. A drop of Locktite may even be a good idea. I must have been doing these while Don was answering you!! LOL
Chris.

Good job, Chris and nice 1938 handles! For some reason, I never took any photos of the attachment hole and none of those on my Classifed Ads show it as well as yours. I also have some of the screws which are Phillips head as I recall, but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong,

Thanks Don, and yes, you're right (of course!) on both counts: 1938 handle and yes, Phillips head on the screw; you can see it clearly in my 3rd pic... Chris.

So I guess we're waiting for Dan W to report back whether the handle/shaft has pulled out of the escutcheon, or the whole kit and caboodle has come out as a result of the screw falling out.

Merry Christmas to all.
