Back to somewhat less than fun with used cars. Am just finishing sorting out an expensive Bermuda Triangle for a new owner. It seems the ad description "meticulously maintained" meant the car had been waxed in the past year.
Sooooo we rebuilt the brakes and changed rear wheel bearings, and control arm bushings and made the top work and the generator charge. And on and on. After getting the exhaust quiet enough to hear, the rumble from the bottom of the engine was evident and alarming. Off with the pan to discover that the rods were in backwards so the oil spray would be to the wrong side of the engine. But that wasn't the source of the rumble. No, that came from the main bearing bolts being hardly more than finger tight--one had even backed itself out. Never saw that before. Am pleased to announce that by turning the rods and tightening all the bolts the the engine is quiet as should be and astonishingly no lasting damage had been done. Aren't there supposed to be cotter pins on those bearing bolts? There were when we rebuilt my dad's '38 Super 8 a year or so ago. Not sure if that changed for the later years or not.

Cotter pins weren’t used on these later engines and even my 1940 110 didn’t have them.
