The off centre hole is for the oil squirt orifice in the connecting rod

Typically the center hole is to feed oil to the wrist pin and the off-center one sprays oil to the thrust-side cylinder wall prior to the piston downstroke. Of course when installed in the rod cap, they are non-functional.

1937 PACKARD Instructions state to face all 12 squirt holes to the starter side. Guessing they gave up on what they were gaining and just relied on the splash system which most engines were designed to.

Have seen these holes blocked off. Assume they were reaching for higher oil pressure.

As the crank rotates the squirt hole will line up with the connecting rod oil feed. For the eights the oil squirt is directed at the camshaft and the piston slot. This is critical for the earlier cars with stamped cam roller carriers.

On the V-12 then where the oil is directed is determined by where the crankshaft hole is located.

Blocking off the squirt hole is total bone head on motors with long connecting rods. I can image the conversation on that one: "We don't need no holes cuz I saw on the TV that small block bowties don't have no hole in them. Let's do what we seen on the TV."

Carrillos. Made the rods. Besides racing rods. They make old car rods as well.

So I know they know what's up.

They had the Packard rod as an example..

The new rods are a lot lighter.
