1948 Super 8 Victoria Convertible Tonneau Wind Deflector

I recently bought a parts car with a windscreen that goes between the front and rear seats. I did not realize that it was for a 1948 Super 8 convertible until I was reading Robert J. Neal’s book. I looked in the accessories brochure, but there is no mention of it.

Does anyone know anything about these and if they were ever listed as an official accessory?

Thanks!
Ry

Like you, I never found this in the accessories section of the official parts listing. If you look in the accessories section of Neal's book, there is a factory picture of one with a PA# (I'd tell you the page but not in front of me at the moment). I do remember the factory photo showing the glass flat and ending at about the top of the side posts. I have only seen one in person and it too was flat across the top, apparently some were higher and curved at the posts.

Cool piece, it's on my "nice to have" list. Only thing keeping me from actively seeking one out is the method for entering the rear of the car. Is it easily moveable or pretty fixed? i.e. need to crawl under it to enter?

Mike

Very uncommon, I've only encountered it perhaps a half-dozen times over many years. It is a legit Packard accessory and I have seen it some piece of Packard literature, though I can't at the moment recall just where. Attaching two pix of it, one on a Super 8 and one on a Custom 8, plus one of a similar and likely more convenient arrangement on a 1948 Chrysler Town & Country.

Thanks to Stuart Blond for one or more of the photos.

Just a guess, but with two sets of handles on both sides, one forward and aft, they must turn and delatch the glass so it can be pivoted to allow entry. Otherwise, not much utility if you're over 3 years old. A throw back to the by then defunct open car era.
I doubt it would stop your hairdo from getting mussed up. If you're going to own or ride in a convertible, that's part of the fun. Most people will roll the windows up if it's too windy or put the top up.
Even if it's a rare part, I doubt it has much value since it fits a very small number of cars, and many didn't survive.
Convertibles suffer when they sit and the top rots and weather gets in and rots the floor pan and interior. I seen several victoria "projects" offered for sale at ridiculous prices that where missing the inside.
You might try the Studebaker or Packard museums for more insight.

I think I know the car in the PA auction and who was making that cock and bull story about parade cars. Here are pictures of Truman, Dewey, and a factory photo to verify authenticity. I think the accessory is more a nuisance but makes for good conversation.

And note the crooked bumper on the Truman car.
