The red painted engines were not factory rebuilt but rather new replacement long blocks with no stamped serial number.
I have one of these that came out of a 22nd Series Custom 8 sedan.

Hey, I've been meaning to get back to you about this and finally remembered. I'm curious how you arrived at the information you described about the red engines. I believe you're right, but I'd like to read up on it if I can. Thanks, Dave

I'm not aware of any factory literature that mentions this but have based my comment on an actual replacement block that was painted red and had no stamped serial number. It came out of a 22nd Series Custom 8 that had an original engine number of G60904C (From an old title for the car) with a casting date of January 24, 1950 for the replacement.

I also used to have a ‘50s 9-main 327 engine with no stamping and remnants of red paint.

Okay, thanks for that. Since my original post I've had a chance to get under the car and do some work with plenty of light. My engine block was definately red. I know I read about replacement engines being red someplace, but I didn't bookmark it so I'll keep looking. I'll post what ever I find for everyone.

I'm curious if this is actual finish coat red paint on the inline engines or could it be the same red primer Packard left on backs of many painted on one side only pieces of sheetmetal.

There is a 55 bulletin notifying the field several V8 service engines were painted the wrong color and put in stock. It was suggested mechanics repaint them the correct color for the model before installing the engine. Possibly in some years the earlier service engines were left in primer and mechanics were expected to repaint those in the proper color as it seems might have been done on the engines where traces of red were found..

And they could have been left in primer in the era when all those postwar 6s and 8s motors were also deemed to be factory authorized replacements for pre-war engines. Then I would imagine they would get painted green, instead of gray by the installing dealership.
