Best Gaskets does not sell directly but Olson’s Gaskets carries their products. I prefer the cork as it seems more forgiving to irregularities on the pan surface so if they don’t have it, they can make one for you. Before installing, make sure that the holes in the pap haven’t been deformed by over tightening but if they have, lightly tap them flat again.

Get a bottle of this from your local parts store or Amazon, and apply it to the pan gasket surface. Not only will it make a leakproof seal, but it will also hold the gasket in place if you ever need to drop the pan again.

I think it's got to do with the age of the gasket. They tend to "shrink" over time as they age and dry out. An appropriate soaking can return them to their original size.

However, a "new" gasket will probably have no shrinkage.

That makes sense. I assembled my engine and it never occurred to me to pre-soak, but then it was a fresh gasket set and it all worked great. I did use a sealant as well as I am all for 'belt and braces' whenever possible!

I have never soaked them but I do generally put on a light coating of a general purpose grease. I also apply a thin layer to the block and it helps hold up the gasket while trying to maneuver the pan into place.

I bought an "old" gasket set once and the pan gasket included had suffered considerable shrinkage over time, but with enough soaking it returned to size.

I have purchased gaskets from Olson, Kanter and Max Merritt all of them were good quality. A tip, on smaller gaskets make a pattern from them on card stock, buy some cork gasket material or paper and and make your own. I bought a hole punch set at Harbor freight for less that $20.
