Functional equivalent. You can tell the difference if you have a pair side by side by looking at the oil groove. It's in a slightly different position than the stock Packard lifter, as well as dimensionally different. The BB Chrysler ones have the oil groove high enough that most people including me think they'll be oil starved.

Switching back to torque convertor world: presumably, the end play was at least functional before disassembly, and you have not changed any of the components that control end play, soooooo it should snap back together. I know, I know.

Anyway be sure the thrust washers shown if figures 59, 60, and 63 of the shop manual are not sitting cocked, or perhaps have their locating tangs on top of instead of next to a bolt head. It is a little tricky to get the reactor rear washer settled in the right place. Check it out and make sure its tangs have not somehow gotten bent. Without your o-ring, the two halves of the convertor should kiss without resort to force.

There is a way to measure the reactor end play without the spiffy tool: snug the two halves of your convertor together with about 4 bolts. With an indicator, measure the overall up and down movement of the reactor shaft. Be sure to pull up hard to get all play out, and push down firmly to make sure the shaft goes all the way down. Note this measurement. Pop your convertor top back off, and remove the reactor rear thrust washer. Measure how far below the surface of the clutch the shoulder of the reactor shaft is--usually about .025 to .030. Subtract this from your other reading and you will have the endplay.

Henry,

I am catching up on your blog, and noticed that you also use a vibratory tumbler. For anyone not familiar with this device, I have a mini review of the Eastwood product over at the Packard Paddock site.

One thing I have found that is really useful is adding a little degreaser to the tumbling media. From the blog:

In the instructions that came with the tumbler they recommend adding a little bit of water; just enough to moisten the media and parts, not enough to have a standing puddle. I have modified this some, and now add a dilute degreaser, like Marine Clean, instead of water. I have found this gives me better results.


You are really doing a great job on your car. Your perseverance with the transmission is a real inspiration.

Ross you are 100% right, the tangs on that one washer were lined up wit the bolts and not between the bolts when i put it together......then i tightened it all down on top of that and crushed the crap out of that piece. i was able to pound it back out flat, but i wont use it...i'll seek a NOS or a good used. i have asked Mike Dotson if he had any. if anyone else has that part and it is in good shape i sure could use it. you can see it in the pictures. i think it is group 3.6173...the one with the prongs.

i took out the old one from my old TC....but it was crap on the bottom, so i couldn't use it. you can see the that someone decided to cut off the top of that reactor shaft on my old one....rendering it worthless...man they really did jack up that old TC.

well i flattened out the one i bent and got it lined up right and BAM it went together without any problems and i was able to turn the reactor shaft both was without any issues. the bearing that i brushed is still not right because before i brushed it i couldn't move the reactor shaft just by putting it in the converter pump housing itself and trying to turn it from top or bottom. so i think a new bushing is needed, i asked Mike Dotson about that one too.

Mike Franko let me borrow his Kent Moore end play tool.....and it was perfect....fyi all you need is one that is 1" diameter and it is perfect. THANKS MIKE FRANKO!!! you da man!! i tightened up the Converter with the four bolts and i hooked up my dial and i was getting inbetween .007 to .009....that could have been from the bent washer that i banged back flat....or it could just not be enough and i need to adjust the thrust washer with a thinner one.

with the converter tightened i was able to turn the reactor shaft by hand in both directions and i was able to put it in the transmission without issue and it turned very easy in both directions without moving the tailshaft. so i am on the right track, just got to get few parts that got messed up from living and learning and i will be good to go.

i also worked on getting the waterpump apart.....i got it with a bit of effort. the rebuild kits from Max have the pulley mount off already, so i am guessing in will have to press of that piece and put it on the new shaft.....but looked into the hole on the pump....it looks really worn out....what do you guys think about water pump housing itself....looks worn bad.

my son threw on some gloves and dug into it with me today too. it was fun ;0)

i also got a GREAT gift from Mike Franko too....some pieces that belonged to my Grandfather. things that were about the 1937 Limo 138cd. even the title all the way back to 1973 and the owners name before 1973. a complete ledger of all things bought and done to the car. the original ad posted by my Grandmother when my Grandfather died.

my Grandfather was was an architect and he loved to drawl his renditions of Packard cars.

I also have letter from PMCC date 1948 from the advertising dept.

the vibratory machine told me never to add any kind of fluid to the material, maybe the eastwood one is different design. idk.

Henry, thanks for sharing your grandfather's documents with us. You are most fortunate to have them back in the family again. A 20th and 21st Series Clipper Parts Manual and a 1955 Packard Parts Manual that were my father's were recently returned to me. It is neat to see his handwritten notes and additional pages of information he inserted.

OZ....hmmmmm my dad didn't let me borrow his 1970 Dodge Dart Swinger, so i'm not sure how to answer that.....but i think there will be too much money, sweat, blood, and tears to lend it to a 16yo.

Mike Dotson was able to get me the correct endshaft bushing for the TC. he tapped it out of another one that was NOS and he is also sending me the pronged bushing i bent the crap out of. then i will recheck endplay and let him know about the thrust washer thickness to see if he has it.

oh, and Max refunded me the 25 i spent on that bushing...he thinks it is probably the wrong size too. ;0) thanks Max!

didn't do anything last night, eyes were bothering me.
