got this last weekend. i don't know anything about it. can you tell me what model it is? it has a straight 8 of unknown cubic inch with 3 on the tree. it runs and drives. i drove it 60 miles home. want to leave it 6v. haven't had too much time since i got it to really check it out. but so far here are my problems.
1. likes to come out of first gear
2. brakes are jerky when applied but stops pretty good.
3. turn signals/ brake lights don't work
4. wipers don't work
5. parking brake doesn't work

If you can give me the first 4 digits of the serial number off of the tag on the driver's side cowl under the hood I can tell you what model it is. As for the first gear popping out, it's probably needing an adjustment of the shift linkage. Brakes being jerky usually means mis-adjustment, they're not self-energizing brakes, so you have to do that yourself every once in a while. Turn signals and brake lights, try bulbs then start checking the wiring. Wipers, they're vacuum operated and didn't work worth a crap when they were new, but you can get the motor rebuilt. Check the vacuum hose running from the intake manifold to the wiper motor first before getting too excited about that. Parking brake, most likely the cables have rusted in their sheathes, you'll have to either buy new ones, or take them off and spray a bunch of WD40 or the like on them and try to get them freed up.

thanks for the help!!! every bit is appreciated. my data plate is missing! is there any other way to tell the model and the engine size?
as i get to know the car a little better i will need your help more.

It LOOKS like an Eight, but look by the heater under the hood and see if the Brigg's body tag is there, and post the first 4 numbers here.

On the drivers side of engine just below the head/block separation will be a smooth pad area with the engine number stamped. Will be a letter followed by several numbers and possibly another letter or two. Start looking about the distributor and work back to above starting motor & should find it. Might be faint or covered with grease but will tell the size and what series car it was built for.

Love your new tub. You will have lots of fun with that.
The brown-painted instrument bezels, the stainless arch on the door panels, and the lack of stainless on the door uppers tell me that it's an Eight. Your model number would be 2292. You will have one of Packard's best engines, the 288. That engine had a relatively short stroke for the era--3.75" so it doesn't particularly mind being revved if you need to peel the paint off the door of your neighbor's 48 Oldsmobile in a grudge match.

It's not hard to make these into reliable drivers so just keep chipping away at your "issues".
