The embossed thief-proof number is correct for a 6th series (mfd 8/1/28 to 8/20/29) but doesn't give any further information, though it's a high number and thus probably a late car.

The vehicle number, which should match the engine#, says it's 5th series Single Six which it obviously isn't so perhaps the vehicle number was mis-read, or the plate is a replica and was mis-stamped, or the plate is from another vehicle.

I'm still betting it's a 640, wheelbase should be 140 inches. What number is used for the current registration or title? And try to get the engine number.

No question about it: It's a 640.
If I were buying, I'd want to see a paper trail going way back as to who owned it. What you need to find out is if it has had a body swap.

OK, folks.
update.
it has a 140 inch wheel base.
and the numbers listed are correct.
the engine number matches the VIN.
and he stated the wheels are original chrome but were re-chromed in the 70's.

the owner has owned the car since 1974.

Sorry, I can't help any further. The body by thief-proof # is 6th series and by appearance and wheelbase is a 640, but engine #s for the 640/645 run from 167001 to 178879. Engine # you provided, based on my references, is for a 5th series 526/533 Single Six which it certainly is not. Perhaps the car is some sort of mongrel, perhaps there is another explanation that evades me at this time.

I see that this car has been listed in the Owners Registry with the data provided. In the registry, the type is listed as 373. Could this be the body type? If so, the body is from a 745 and is a deluxe sport phaeton, not a custom phaeton. The serial number is a puzzle as it is for a 526/533 and is not consistent with the 140" wheelbase Dave measures, which would be for a 640. Too many inconsistencies.

Dave,

Once you sort out the inconsistencies mentioned above could you please update the Packard Owner's Registry entry for your '29?
