It is back on

The head is back on. The distributor area is paint free. The water neck will seal fine, a new gasket and black silicon will see to that. I will re-torque it tonight, tomorrow am and then after running it a little while. The head gasket is an NOS Victor gasket, asbestos and steel. I will be picking up my front seats tomorrow.

Tomorrow I will add coolant, then change the oil and fire it up. I pick up my front seats tomorrow Am. I miss driving the car. It has been down 3 weeks now.

Hello,
Can you tell me what the torque value you used on your engine? I have a 39 Super8 (320 cu in) that is now running for the first time since. 1967. I need to check the head for proper torque. Thanks, Rick M '39 Super 8

G'day Ray,
Like all Packard flathead engines of that era Packard head nuts are tightened to 63 Ft Lbs. Might be a little late but, if not, they should be tightened down in the recommended sequence and in increments to "sneak up" on the 63. Then, after initial start up, allow to run until the engine is thoroughly warmed up(30mins) then retighten, again in sequence, to 63. Retighten again after say a couple of hundred miles, then check and retighten every year thereafter. Others may have a slightly different procedure that they follow for this important process.

Just confirming, Mal's advice is the preferred method. Threads need to be clean and DRY.

The advice here was very much appreciated and put to use. The engine has been performing beautifully. I try to get the car out every weekend. I plan on driving it tomorrow and Sunday.
