1950 288 Intake Manifold

Dear Packard owners,

I have a cracked intake manifold for my 1950 288 cid engine and want to replace it. Can you give me any leads on a fair priced one? Kanter has one for $415.00, which is too high for my budget. My understanding is that the intake/exhaust manifold set was the same for 1948-1950 288 cid engines. Is this accurate, or do I need to look for some type of manifold number stamped on the intake itself in order to use other years? I haven't yet removed the intake manifold form the engine. Thanks for your help.

I used to have one but not sure if I still do. I'll be heading up to my Oregon shop in a few weeks and can check then if you haven't already found one.

It will need to be from a 48-50 because of the throttle linkage mounting. Otherwise 51-54 would also fit if you could fab a little bracket for the linkage. They will all have 288 cast onto the front runner. One from a 327 will also fit, the runners are a bit bigger which you can view as a high performance upgrade or a greater chance for bogging when you floor it. Have one, but cant get to it till spring.

If yours is cracked on the vertical wall below the carb, that is just an exhaust gas passage and will not affect the running of the engine. You can patch that with a little steel plate, self tapping screws and some furnace cement.

Gerry posted this manifold thread a few years back. Don't know if he was knocked over in the rush for used manifolds.

I have a manifold for a 1949-1950 Series 23 288 engine. The intake and exhaust manifolds are bolted together. You can have both for $200. The parts are very heavy so shipping might be an issue. They are used parts taken off a complete engine that I obtained as a spare. The condition is unknown so before buying you should inspect or send someone you could use to inspect. I live in the San Diego area. Fred Puhn (619)475-1155.

Things must be heating up. A few years ago my whole running engine was estimated worth $500 on here, so maybe I better sell manifolds???
